Aiko Herzig-Yoshinaga and her family were imprisoned in the Japanese “internment” camps during World War II, and in her later life she dedicated herself to investigating the United States’ true rationale for imprisoning its citizens in concentration camps. She uncovered evidence of racial bias, leading to the American Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which awarded the victims of the Japanese internment and their families $20,000 and a formal apology.
